Colchian Emmer, also known as Kolkhuri Asli is an rare bread wheat species that is endemic to the Republic of Georgia. It is classified as a winter wheat. The grain protein content is 18.8%, and is very suitable for bread baking. It adapts well to regions with high humidity and also performs well under hot and dry conditions. Also known to be resistant to fungal diseases.
I planted on October 1st of 2018 and harvested the following summer on July 13th 2019. The plants were healthy with a height of 52 inches tall. The yield was modest for this first trial but the grain quality was good. There were some minor visible symptoms of fusarium, which was not surprising given the incredibly wet spring and early summer we had here in Northern Indiana.
I am excited to offer another historic wheat variety from the Republic of Georgia. I will be replanting again this fall to increase seed stock.
I do not know the extent of winter hardiness for this variety in regions colder than zone 5.
