Alpine Einkorn Wheat

The seed for this rare einkorn strain was sent to me from a friend in Italy last winter (2017). He sourced the seed directly from a farmer in the Austrian Alps. I planted this in the spring, not wanting to wait a full year and a half for seed. It did fine as a spring wheat but I suspect that it would produce even better fall seeded. The plants reached a height of 45″ tall and would need support in areas with heavy spring and early summer rains.

*I am offering this seed for the purpose of preservation. This variety will need selection and adaptation to improve grain fill, yield and disease resistance.

You can see a comparison of einkorn varieties below. The KUSA selection is my standard einkorn variety.
