SZ-86 is an early maturing upland rice cultivar developed in Hungary. It is an awnless medium-grain type. The plants reached a height of 2 1/2 foot and had minimal issues with lodging, even during the derecho wind storm that blew through Northern Indiana in early August. The plants started flowering on July 8th, 47 days after transplanting in late May. I harvested over a 2 week period starting on August 20th (90 days from transplanting). The overall yield was good for a early maturing variety at 6 1/2 pounds of paddy per 100 square foot of bed space (approx. 100 plants).
I will be adding a flavor profile sometime this winter.
