Severenyj Rice (Russian landrace)

Severenyj is a landrace variety from Primorskij kraj, which is a federal subject of Russia located across the Sea of Japan from Hokkaido Island. I obtained my initial seed from Sylvia Davatz in Vermont.

Severenyj is a mostly awnless short grain, brown rice variety. I did notice some diversity in height and a few plants with awns (many landraces exhibit diversity within a single variety).  It flowered 51 days from transplanting and was harvested 98 days from transplanting. The tallest plants grew to 41″ in height and had issues with lodging during periods of heavy rainfall. I would recommend providing support for this variety in regions that can experience periods of heavy rainfall in the summer. *I will be adding a flavor/cooking profile to this page in the near future.
