Kyzyl Shala Rice (Uzbekistan short-grain)

Kyzyl Shala is an extremely early rice variety from Uzbekistan that performed well under upland conditions. This may be a landrace, as it exhibited a lot of diversity, especially in awn color (black and red).

The plants flowered 62 days after transplanting. I harvested 91 days after transplanting. This variety grows tall  (4 foot) and had some minor lodging issues during periods of heavy rain. Kyzyl Shala is an awned type with good yields, similar to Duborskian. It is a short grain brown rice.
