Zapalote Chico

This Mexican corn from Oaxaca was part of the 2020 Michiana Heritage Corn Project trials. It produced very early at 106 days from planting and the harvest continued for another 3 weeks. I kept seed from the earliest maturing ears for future planting. The plants reached a height of approx. 8 foot and had 2 ears per stalk. This is a traditional landrace prized for fresh eating as well as making dry corn products like tortillas. Zapalote Chico will be a corn that I intend to continue working with over the coming seasons. Here is some more information about this corn from Biodiversidad Mexicana:
