I obtained seed for the Stella barley from Ruurd Walrecht of Sweden in 2017. This is a pedigree-line selected from a landrace barley in Dalarna Sweden called Bollanas. Stella is listed in a 1910 US Department of Agricultural experimental station record, “Ottawa barley trials”. It is a six row hulled barley which produces many grain bearing tillers (10 – 15). It has very strong stems and had zero issues with lodging during periods of heavy rainfall. The plants were fairly short reaching about 2 1/2 foot tall and bushy, quickly establishing a canopy to shade out weeds. I planted at the end of March and harvested on July 3rd. Stella is used for both animal feed and human consumption.
