Composites and Mixtures

The idea of a composite mixture is a new concept I started exploring last season with the Gaspe’ corn. My desire was to increase the genetic diversity of a single variety, Gaspe’, using multiple sources of seed and growing them together in a block. This year I expanding my thinking beyond a single variety. Inspired by plant breeders like Joseph Lofthouse (promiscuous pollination), Telsing Andrews (Canadian farmer and seed breeder), Carol Deepe (Beefy Resilient Grex Bean) and Bill Davison (developing a red flint corn composite and a rye composite in Illinois), I decided to try my hand at this approach and hopefully create something beneficial. Maybe even a future landrace for my region. The following composites are all “works in progress”. If you purchase any of these composites, you can grow and select for what impresses you, or you can continue to grow them as a mixture, allowing for continual crossing. Necessary Good Fun!
