Macha Wheat

Triticum aestivum subsp. macha

Macha is a winter hulled bread wheat from the Caucasus region. It has a long history in the Republic of Georgia, having been widely grown until the 1930’s after which it was replaced by higher yielding modern varieties. One of its unique traits is that it is adaptable to extreme weather conditions, especially humid regions. Macha has a strong resistance to pests and disease. The grain protein content is 18% making it quite suitable for bread baking.

I planted on October 1st 2018 and harvested this summer July 13th 2019. The plants tillered well and reached a modest height of 50 inches tall. The yield was good from my small plot. Birds were also very fond of this wheat as it matured.

I am excited to offer another historic wheat variety from the Republic of Georgia. I will be replanting again this fall to increase seed stock as well as trialing 3 other macha landrace varieties from Georgia as well as 1 wild strain.

* I do not know the extent of winter hardiness for this variety in regions colder than zone 5.
