Karan-3 Barley

Hordeum vulgare var. nudum

karan 3 3 1000 by 750This variety of hulless barley is one of 9 heirloom varieties I trialed in 2014. The majority of the seed came from The KUSA Seed Society. These are all human consumption types that are easily threshed and dehulled. Most barley grown here in Northern Indiana is raised for animal feed, forage, and straw. Barley is fairly susceptible to cereal diseases brought on by wet conditions during flower pollination. It had few issues with lodging or disease.

This barley varietal is from the “Miracle Seeds” collection developed in India a number of years ago using natural plant breeding and selection techniques. Karan-3 is a six row barley that reaches 20” – 28” in height. Kernel protein is 16% , and a 3.5 – 3.8 % lysine content. This variety matures in around 90 days and tillers vigorously. Reported to grow well with limited inputs and limited irrigation. I found this one to be more difficult to dehull than most of the other hulless varieties I offer. Karan-3 might be an excellent choice for raising as animal feed. Planted on April 1st and harvested July 4th.  Packet contains 7 grams (approx. 150 seeds)
